Burna Boy

Almost a month after he was declared wanted by the Nigerian Police, Nigerian dancehall star, Burna Boy was arrested on Friday, 15th of December and taken to Ikeja Magistrate Court on Monday, 18th of December where he was granted bail by the presiding magistrate Mrs B.O Osunsanmi.

The arrest was for his involvement in Mr 2Kay’s attack and robbery which happened on the 22nd of October at Eko Hotel and Suites. According to Burna Boy, he is innocent of the charges being laid against him, rather the person who is responsible for the attack is his road manager, Joel Kantiok, who had allegedly sent thugs to Mr 2Kay’s hotel room and they did not just beat him up, they also stole his properties.

Burna pleaded not guilty to both counts of accessory to armed robbery and conspiracy and despite protests from the lawyers representing Eko Hotel and Mr. 2Kay’s label Grafton Entertainment, he was granted bail of 100,000 Naira with two responsible sureties while the case was adjourned to 29th of December.

The prosecution was led by Inspector  Nwagwu Peter who did not disagree with the decision to grant bail, stating that Burna Boy did not disclose to security operatives what he knew about the armed robbery which took place on the 22nd of October.

“I Really Want Africa To Accept Me The Way I Am…”– Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale

Controversial Ghanaian dancehall star, Shatta Wale is calling on Africans and everyone else to accept him the way he is and his Shatta Movement.

This statement was made more than once during his live interview on Instagram with Soundcity where the singer was talking about the number of features he has in his new album, Reign.

When asked how many African artiste he has in his album aside Olamide whom he revealed he is featuring, the singer went on what seems like a defensive statement on why he hasn’t featured more African artiste in an album that is supposed to be about Africa. He said;

It’s a great project I’m doing and I really want Africa to buy me and accept me the way I am with my Shatta movement and in terms of the Shatta brand as well. I felt if I needed somebody on the album, I could’ve dropped anybody on it for him or her to just do stuff but I feel wonders came with Olamide’s feeling and when I asked my fans on Snapchat… it’s Olamide for now, no be rushing thing. My boy Burna boy dey there, Wizkid dey there, Davido dey there, you know I get a whole lot of artiste wey me I know but music is a spiritual thing, no be rush thing… so on this album we have Olamide on it and the album is strictly for Africa”

The issue of Africans accepting him was once again mentioned when he was asked if he has ever thought of featuring Wizkid or 2face in his Oluwa is my Boss track.

He said;

Yea, you know, it’s a great song and I believe more beautiful songs are going to come up like that. That’s what I’m saying, I just want people to accept me and understand me as me you know, so when I’m doing songs I know I need to feature people on it like that, but people know how to listen to good song and music lovers know what is good music, so yea, we’re just going with the trend…” that doesn’t seem like the question asked what answered, but it sure feels like Shatta Wale is answering all question with his song of acceptance, asking that African accept him the way he is so that they can collaborate and create good music together.

This statement takes us back to the Stonebwoy interview we recently reported where Stonebwoy stated that he is not ready to do any song with Shatta even after Shatta Wale called him continuously. According to Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale cannot tarnish his image behind him and come around seeking for a collaboration so they can make up. To Stonebwoy, that kind of relationship is not one he can tolerate.

That said, the same issue might be what is affecting Shatta Wale with other artistes like Wizkid whom he has in one way or the other insulted publicly and now finding hard to make peace with because it looks like he has also been trying to get through to Davido, but nothing yet because he revealed that Davido was getting too busy for him and he doesn’t like it. Although the words were said in an unserious manner, one could tell that he was serious about it.

Speaking about his Shatta Movement, he said;

I know a whole lot of Africans is gonna get this news, but Shatta movement is just a clique that likes to make people know who we really are. We be youth wey we feel say, yea, we can really make life out of music and it’s music we want to do. It’s not about violence, it’s not about fighting, you know. We believe entertainment comes in a big package and we really wanna tell the world about it and show Africa about it. Maybe the more developed world have gotten to realize what music is about and how the package is like, but we wanna show people that yea, these are the boys that can make you happy, these are the youths that are watching Africa to rise to the next level in the world… so everybody wey loves Shatta movement e for know say e be survival movement … e be super scary”.

Burna Boy Sold Out & Shut Down O2 Academy, Brixton!

“Burna” Boy has etched his name on the wall of great artistes with his impressive performance on the night of Sunday, 7th of October at his sold-out show at the O2 Academy, Brixton with its 2,000 capacity on the 7th of October 2018.

The concert was an experience for his fans as the singer made a spectacular entrance to the stage in a convertible; thrilling his dedicated fans with some of his hits from old school t his present hits including.

One of the most memorable parts of the night was when his hit song “Ye” came up and even before he could start performing, fans already took up the task, singing at the top of their voices, word for word while their camera lights lit up the place in the beautiful form that is now popular amongst performers. This act of love to his song rendered “Burna boy” speechless as he experiences that moment every performing artistes hope to at least experience in their career; fans who paid to watch him perform already performing for him.

This great performance prompted comparison as fans started, in their usual manner, comparing Wizkid and Burna. This comparison was refuted by many who stated that “Burna Boy”, because of his 2,000 capacity sold out O2 venue cannot be compared to Wizkid who has sold out a 20,000 capacity O2 Arena.

The concert is presently one of the most talked about issue on social media as people are still reliving the moment of “Burna boy’s” greatness in O2 on the 7th of October 2018.

While fans have been trying to stir up an argument with a comparison since “Burna” boy performed at the O2 Academy Brixton on Sunday, 7th of October, Davido and some other artistes have come out to congratulate Burna Boy on his successful show and acknowledge the greatness that lies in him.

Davido had posted his appreciation and homage to “Burna” Boy on IG yesterday telling him that the industry is blessed to have a talented artiste like him while Mr May D went further to state that another King is born in Burna Boy.

There had been controversial statements going around social media, and might still be going on, especially on Twitter since Burna Boy’s performance with fans saying he is better than other artistes people consider the best in the Nigerian music industry. This post by  Davido, who was also among those compared, only goes to prove that the industry isn’t about pitting against each other rather it is more focused on celebrating the greatness of another artiste and encouraging others to be their best possible selves and win too.

Must You Return To Your Root As An African Artiste In Diaspora To Succeed? Here's Burna's Take

Burna Boy

Afrofusion artiste, Burna Boy has opined that it is important as an African artiste in the Afrobeat genre or any other genre that tells the African story to not isolate themselves in other countries or be contented in operating in another country without experiencing their country of origin by coming back home. To Burna, this attitude might hamper the success of the artiste.

This was revealed in his recent interview with UK Based Nigerian media personality, Dayo on The BeatFM London. Speaking about how important it is for an artiste operating in the diaspora to come back home, Burna Boy used himself as an example and also stated that while his opinions are his, whoever understands him can learn from it.

He said;

I can only speak for myself and if anyone can relate to what I’m saying, that’s cool, but for me, it’s like being here and doing afrobeat or whatever genre you guys call it, it’s almost like…  what tree are you gonna climb? A tree with no root or one with solid root? Because you know that when you climb you won’t fall right? If you’re here (diaspora) and you don’t go back, you don’t know who you are and you don’t know what you’re really doing in the first place. So you have to go and know and see and understand and become before you can come back. But as I said, I speak for myself coz I don’t know other people’s situations.

To Burna Boy, an African artiste has to go back to his root so he can understand and fully become after being informed. This knowledge which will inform your music has the tendency to make you more accepted because the people you sing about and sing for can now relate to your song, and that is a win because it has the chances of making those people your fan.

The issue of acceptance, using Burna Boy as a case study is not usually not intentional, however, your story and lyrical delivery as an African will tell through your music that you understand the African story your craft narrates and this also makes you more real to Nigerians and make them see you more as their artiste than when you don’t come back at all.

To Burna Boy, coming back gives you an understanding of the story your music tells and also a sense of belonging, hence his analogy to the tree you climb which is the growth of your career and the root to give you balance and support.

But what do y’all think? How important is it for an African artiste to come back home? Do you also think an African artiste cannot succeed if he doesn’t come back home? Let’s hear it!

Wizkid, Davido or Burna Boy; who deserves the most awards this year?

$
0
0

2017 was a great year for Davido. With the release of the biggest Afrobeat songs, If and Fall which still continue to enjoy maximum play in the international market, the singer promised that we had only seen the tip of the iceberg. He boasted that 2018 would even be a bigger year and it was nearly unarguable. Wizkid also had a great year, but he did not make so much impact and did not release so many bangers. Although he made Manya with Mutay, Ma lo with Tiwa Savage, the Starboy was not as influential as Davido.

These two acts have been compared times without number. As much as some people like to believe that it is not necessary to do so, it should be considered that it is perfectly normal and inevitable. In fact, a lot of their successes directly or indirectly depends on the comparison of the two acts. Since they both came into the limelight, they have been frontliners for the growth of Afrobeats.

2018 has been a major year for Afrobeats and Nigerian acts. More artistes have taken their careers more seriously and are doing major things to promote the African sound to the world. Runtown, Patoranking, Wande Coal, Mr. Eazi have all been working so hard to break into the international market – and they have. Despite all of this, Wizkid and Davido refuse to step down from their prestigious positions. The two artistes remain at the forefront and continue to thrill their respective fans with their music. But things are quite different this year. Burna Boy decided that he was not playing around this year and went ahead to seize the music industry by its throat. He dropped insanely hot jams this year and joined in on the contest of who is claiming 2018 (music wise).

Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy, undoubtedly, are the top three hottest Nigerian acts at the moment. Between the three acts, songs like Fever, Ye, Assurance, Gbona, and so many others have dropped.

Wizkid (flying under the Starboy label) released Soco, the biggest Afropop song in 2018. There had been speculations that Wizkid was stuck in his Sony deal and could no longer release songs on a whim. However, this did not impede the artist this year. He was on a song (Fake Love) with the king of Pon Pon sound, Duncan Mighty. He featured on so many major songs this year like Nowo, Soco, Energy, Bella, Joanna remix. He dropped two singles, Fever and Master Groove and the former featured Tiwa Savage in the video – something that captured the attention of a lot of music fans and stirred a lot of controversy on social media. Wizkid managed to beat all odds in 2018 even though he was involved in a scandal with his baby mama calling him out for being a deadbeat. Soco is currently the most viewed Nigerian music video on YouTube in 2018. Fever is doing massive numbers. He is surely a strong contender for the artiste bagging the most awards this year.

Davido might truly be Nigeria’s biggest act. The ‘Assurance’ singer raised the bar to another level and set new standards when he won a BET award, making him the first African artiste to win a BET award at the show in the US. Assurance (which featured his lover, Chioma in the video) was the 2018 most viewed Nigerian music video on Youtube before Soco overtook it. He collaborated with many artistes including Duncan Mighty, Peruzzi, Mayorkun, Sean Tizzle, Kizz Daniel, dishing out jams upon jams. He was on A Boogie wit Da Hoodie’s album as well as Quavo’s album. He sold out tours in the UK and the States and held concerts all over Europe. His performance at Wireless was absolutely phenomenal and was the talk of the town for days. Davido gained more entry into the international market this year, appearing in events, media houses and getting maximum plays on radios. The Afropop artiste might just snatch all the awards in 2018.

If not for anything, Burna Boy deserves to rack all the awards this year for blessing us with Ye only. 2018 has indeed been a great year for Burna. He dropped his third studio album, Outside, earlier in January this year. The album features Ye, Heaven’s Gate (featuring Lily Allen), Sekkle Down (featuring J Hus). Before this year, there had been so much clamor about Burna Boy being underrated and not getting the recognition he deserved. All of that is now behind us (although some people object to this) as the Reggae act is now more prominent than ever. He held shows in the US and seven cities in the UK, shutting down O2 Arena, Brixton. He featured on important projects this year including Major Lazer’s Afrobeat Mix, Lily Allen’s No Shame. He also released chart-topping singles this year: Gbona and On the Low. Burna Boy is described by many as one of the best songwriters in the Nigerian music industry.

I carried out a poll on Twitter to see which artiste people think should win the most awards this year and this is the result below;
